

{"id":7329,"date":"2022-05-03T12:49:42","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T12:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/the-museum\/11-eira-threshing-floor\/"},"modified":"2022-05-03T12:49:42","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T12:49:42","slug":"11-eira-threshing-floor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/en\/the-museum\/11-eira-threshing-floor\/","title":{"rendered":"11.- Eira\/threshing floor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In front of the mill&#8217;s bazao is the <em>eira<\/em> (threshing floor), a paved open space where the <em>mallega<\/em> (threshing) was carried out, an operation by which the rye and wheat were shelled, separating the grain from the chaff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/era.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-883\" src=\"http:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/era.jpg\" alt=\"era\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The oldest procedure consisted of beating the ears of corn with a <em>mallo<\/em> (flail), a farming instrument made up of two sticks, one of which was longer and thinner, joined by ropes or straps. The longer stick was used to grip the tool and propel it, striking the grain rhythmically with the shorter stick to separate the grain. Afterwards it was winnowed with <em>vanos<\/em> (sieves) to clean it of &#8220;dust and chaff&#8221;. At the beginning of the 20th century, mechanical\u00a0<em>malladoras<\/em>\u00a0(threshing) and winnowing machines were added to this operation.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>mallega<\/em> took place in August, after the cereal harvest, and was an activity that attracted large numbers of people, being a reason for families and neighbours to get together and for festive celebrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In front of the mill&#8217;s bazao is the eira (threshing floor), a paved open space where the mallega (threshing) was carried out, an operation by which the rye and wheat were shelled, separating the grain from the chaff.
