

{"id":7297,"date":"2022-05-03T12:29:40","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T12:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/the-museum\/02-the-rectory-house\/02-08-zapateiro-shoemaker-workshop\/"},"modified":"2022-05-03T12:29:40","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T12:29:40","slug":"02-08-zapateiro-shoemaker-workshop","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/en\/the-museum\/02-the-rectory-house\/02-08-zapateiro-shoemaker-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"02.08.- Zapateiro\/shoemaker workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under the stairwell, on the ground floor, there is a recreation of a <em>zapateiro<\/em> (cobbler&#8217;s) workshop with its chair and work table, both low to facilitate the precision of the task, work tools, sewing machine, lasts of different sizes, shoes being made and a sample of the finished products offered to the public, including several rubber sandals that exemplify the adaptation of the old ways to new materials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/zapatero.jpg\"><img class=\"wp-image-1156 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.museodegrandas.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/zapatero.jpg\" alt=\"zapatero\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shoemaking is not a very old trade in these regions, where the traditional footwear were wooden <em>madre\u00f1as<\/em>, <em>galochas<\/em> or <em>zocas<\/em> and leather <em>abarcas<\/em> (sandals). In the mid-18th century there were no registered shoemakers in the municipalities around the Museum. The closest reference is in the council of Taramundi, where nine shoemakers are recorded working in connection with a tannery that existed there.
